cbs 2 news anchor scott sanborn joins us now to explain what that action is. sscott? scott?karen - this morning, president obama spoke from the east room at the white house. he defended his executive actions to tighten background checks, saying this isn't about taking everybody's guns away. public opinion polls show americans support expanding background checks for gun purchases but are divided on the broader question of stricter gun laws. in part, the executive orders narrow the so-called gun show loophole that allows some purchases to happen without a background check. the president got emotional during the news conference, saying our rights to life and liberty were stripped from students inin blacacurg, santa barbara and columbine and first graders in newtown. and from every family who never imagined that their loved one would be taken from ououlives by a bullet from a

time i think about those kids it gets me mad. mad.both republicans and democrats see the executive actions as an opportunity to generate enthusiasm among primary voters. cbs 2 news spoke with the owner of cedar valley outfitters. he belilies solely blaming the issue on guns is not the answer it's easy for people to sit around and say they're mad about violence, i don't like violence. i watched the pictures of the victims you know after sandy hook and they had stories of each kid and put their pictures on there. i'm a parent of two children. do i get emotional about it? yes. the only thing i don't do is blame an inaninite object. but the president's action also includes spending 500- million dollars to increase access to both mental health

this week, charlie hebdo is publishing a special edition to mark the anniversary.the cover r fftures a cartoon of a bearded figure with an assault rifle over his shoulder. the headline reads "one year after: the assassin js still t there." the issue will be published tomorow, on the eve of the anniversary of the attack. more than 100-missouri lawmakers are calling for the firing of an assistant profofsor at ththuniversity. melissa click received nationwide attention after video showed her allegedly trying to intimidate student journalists during a november protest. the lawmakers say she failed to meet obligations to her supervisors and colleagues. they're also asking for the firing of the school's assistant director of greek life who was also caught on the video. the protests were triggered by students concerned the administration was doing too little to address racison campus. still developing this afternrnn - the group of f armed

an oregon wildlife preserve- say they are in it for the long haul. haul.the group calls itself "citizens for constitutiol freedom".they are angry over the prisononsentences given to a father and son - accused of burning federal land to cover up deer poaching.authorities ordered the pair back to prison.they surrendered peacefully yesterday.the group wants to know *why the father and son were taken again - when they had *already served time for the burning of the land.the two men say y e fire was on their properer and it was a controlled burn.the sheriff says the protestors crossed the line when they took control of the building. "you said you were here to help the citizens of harney county, that help ended when a peaceful protest became an armed occupation. the hammonds have turned themselves in, it's time for you to leave our community." again late this afteteoon - the lead protestor promised that the group is prepared to stay as long as it takes to
